Distribution: Widespread across northern North America and Appalachia, on conifers and hardwoods.

Habitat: Northern coniferous forests. Primarily on conifers but also on hardwoods especially aspen.

Substrate: Wood

Identification Notes:

Similar to Fomitopsis mounceae, but often with no red band. When a red band is present it is narrow and more often orange-ish or light red, and not laquered; where the red band on F. mounceae is broad, dark and laquered. On hardwoods the cap can be an ochre color rather than the dark brown typical on conifers.
